Tatami softens my fall.
Show it nuff respect."

Wellsprings Aikido Tatami

Trocellen mats. Wellsprings Aikido has 127 Trocellen® 1m2 interlocking mats. These mats are endorsed by the IJF (International Judo Federation) and WKF (World Karate Federation).

Assembling the mats

Detail of corner of Trocellen mat.

The mats are not symmetrical so when laying them you have to align them to enable them to link correctly. Before placing a mat down rotate it so that the spear/leaf shaped corner is pointing towards the corner of the room to the left of the shomen.

Lay the mats with the green side uppermost.

Dismantling the mats

The mats must not be pulled apart in a lateral direction. Dismantle the mats with an unzipping action. The bottom mat in the pile should have the red face to the ground. Thereafter stack the mats with the same colour faces together (i.e. green to green and red to red) to prevent any dirt on the underside of one mat being transferred to the top side of the next. Always store the mats flat and away from direct heat.

Respect for the tatami

  • No shoes are to be worn on the tatami.
  • Ensure your feet are clean and that any cuts and/or infections are covered. Tabi socks may be worn (available from Nine Circles).
  • Outside footwear is not to be taken into the dojo. It should be left, tidily, in the entrance hall and non-marking indoor footwear (zori) should be used to walk from the dojo door to the edge of the tatami.
  • Zori (shoes) should be worn at all times when not on the mat to avoid transferring dirt onto the tatami.
  • Wear your zori to the edge of the mat. Take them off and step backwards on to the tatami, leaving the zori placed neatly at the edge, side by side, with the toes pointing away from the tatami.
  • Any blood or body fluids spilt on the tatami must be cleaned up immediately.
  • No food or drinks are to be consumed on the tatami.
  • Take care not to damage the tatami with any sharp object and certainly don't lean on your jo or ken with its end sticking into the tatami - that's bad form anyway!
